Clever Kitchen

Checked out my new Twitter friend's website and found this super smart kitchen design. If you're in Atlanta and need kitchen/bath design work, Jamie McPherson is your man!

I love the marble counters and the wood bar top, but what really caught my eye was that tiled ledge. It's such a unique and stylish way to blend in the vent hood.

Very impressive chalkboard/secret storage area!

My only question...where is the fridge?

  1. Hey Kyle! Thanks so much!!! To answer your question the refrigerator is hidden to the left inside the pantry behind the moveable chalkboard. This was done as asolution to the "open living" floor plan. My clients weren't interested in spending well over $6-$7000 for a fully integrated refrigerator that would blend into the architecture of the kitchen, dining and living room and we also liked the visual affect of no upper cabinetry. So as a solution, I proposed incorporating a "scullery" in their design. A scullery was the precursor to the larder/pantry and then the modern day kitchen we know now today. It is essentially a working pantry adjacent to the main food prepping and cooking area. They originated back in the days when we all were still using outdoor cook's houses and then would bring food into the home for presentation and cleanup afterwords. In the kitchen proper are a set of refrigerator drawers to accomodate the most often used items. Then the scullery is easily accessible and the items you need from it just pass right through the sliding chalk board onto the counter adjacent the range. The chalk board is great for grocery lists, but is primarily used by my clients daughter as a canvas for her art. On the other side is corkboard that acts as a family message center.

  4. Jamie thanks for the explanation! You really used your noodle on this design. The scullery + refrigerator drawers is genius. I'm definitely putting this into the "things I'd like to incorporate into my dream house" file.

  5. Honestly, with a kitchen like that I'd give up a full sized fridge! LOVE that tiled ledge and the marble/wood combo is quite genius!
