Paint Colors

I don't know if it's painting season or something, but I've been getting lots of emails lately asking about the paint colors in our house. A while back, I posted a paint tour of the whole place. Please check that out and heed my warnings about the tricky behavior of gray. I get the most questions about our kitchen/den (same paint), the front living room, and the bedrooms, so I went ahead and included the paint formulas used in those areas here...

Den and Kitchen - Senora Gray 1530 - Benjamin Moore

Dining Room - Fashion Grey - Behr

Living Room - Wheat Bread 720C-3 - Behr

Bedrooms - Slate - Restoration Hardware

Hope that helps all of you painters out there!

  2. I see you've painted the ceiling in your living room, any tips? I'm planning on painting the ceiling of the dining room in my new house and I have no idea what I'm doing. I'll be painting the room a really dark grey/black but I assume I should use a lighter grey for the ceiling? Seems there is much possibility for error here. Help!

  3. I just painted the main portion of my house Senora Gray and I LOVE it. However in my home, it has a green tint to it. Looks so different from your pictures. I'm very glad you have put the paint tour on your site. I've found it very helpful in finding a place to start! Paint decisions can be so intimidating. I painted my kitchen cabinets a Sherwin Williams Dover White and it looks very good against the Senora Gray. On the ceiling I have a dark house and wanted to lighten it up. I decided on Sherwin Williams Alabaster. I'm still deciding if I want to take on repainting my trim. It is just so much work!!

  6. I have referred to your paint tour several times and we also ended up going with the Senora Gray. I was in search of a warm gray with yellow undertones because our windows face north and east and it looks great! The number for Senora Gray is 1530 though I believe. You have a beautiful house!! Oh and as for the black chalkboard pantry doors, I say go for it and like you said if you don't like it just more incentive to replace the doors. I recently painted the area under our island with magnetic primer and then the black chalkboard paint. I love the contrast of the black against our wood cabinets in the background and it will be lots of fun for the kiddos as they get older.

  8. My favorite color of the moment is called Balanced Beige from Sherwin Williams. It looks so good. Don't let the name fool you. It's anything but beige. In some spaces it takes on a grey look, in others a brown hue. We get so many compliments and all of our friends are now using it.

  9. Speaking of paint... I would love for you to tell us how you painted the kitchen cabinets in your previous home that showed a few weeks back. Did you do it yourself, or have it professionaly done? Love your color choices by the way.

  11. I take it you like gray. I've never seen a whole house done in six shades of one color.

  16. Your house is AMAZING!! One question. Are your paint colors on the wall the same as on the ceilings? Are there rules to what your ceilings should be in comparison to the walls?

  18. I absolutely love your home! My husband and I just bought our first house this past June on Long Island, NY. The house looked like it was still the 1970s when we moved in, and we are slowly changing it. Thanks for the beautiful ideas, and witty thoughts! Your blog is actually the first blog I have ever read, and I am looking forward to reading your future posts! Janine
