Planters for My Fiddle Leaf Fig Trees

I recently welcomed a pair of Fiddle Leaf Fig trees into my home. These trees make great houseplants and are supposedly easy to care for...hopefully I don't prove that theory wrong! Anyhow, now I seriously need two containers for the trees as you'll see below.

This one is sitting on a beautiful cardboard box lid...

And this one is occupying a lovely metal trash can...

Not exactly the look I'm going for!

I'm thinking that I want either a pair of classic lacquered box planters or Chinese fish bowls. I'm also open to using two different containers. Per the usual, the kinds of planters I like are pretty darned expensive but I found a couple of affordable options. Here's the mix of styles that I like..can you guess which ones are pricey and which are bargains?

The Imari Jardiniere is the priciest one...ringing in at almost $5,500. Needless to say, I won't be getting that one! I'd really like to get a porcelain fish bowl but the larger ones aren't cheap. I'm so mad at myself that I didn't buy one that I saw at Homegoods last year! Anyhow, for my budget, I'm liking #1 and #11. Which ones do you like? This is the room that they'll be going in...

  1. whoa whoa whoa, hold up! First off - where in the WORLD did you find the beautiful fiddle leaf figs? The ones you got are FAB looking! Was just researching this AM on where to find one, and saw another blogger who had gotten some but they were too scrawny. Where did you find these puppies?

#2 - i love every planter you selected and I think you need to search long and hard for an affordable blue/white porcelain one because it would HIT IT HOME in your house! i love all the others, in fact, have the box with the X style at my home, outdoors, and i LOVE them. but your home would look FAB with the b/w porcelain!

  2. Wives - believe it or not, I got these at Home Depot for only $20 per plant! I couldn't believe it because I rarely see them at any nursery in Dallas, much less Home Depot. Any I agree about the b/w porcelain...hope I can find a couple that I can afford!

  3. Love the fish bowls. BTW, do you have a Garden Ridge store near you? They have tons of pots just like this for less than $50. Don't know if they are everywhere or just in the south....

  4. i recently scored a pair of these also, in the home depot just north of dallas. for $20 apiece. i couldn't believe it! i've had mine a few weeks and they're doing great, but one developed some browning on the leaf tips. not sure yet of the cause. i like #11.

  5. Amber B - good idea on Garden Ridge! We do have them around here...just outside of the city. I'll have to make a trip out there before I buy anything.

  6. Pam - Per this info - http://tree-species.blogspot.com/2009/03/indoor-fiddle-leaf-fig-care-tips.html - maybe the leaves need to be dusted a bit?

  7. thanks kyle. i haven't tried that, but will. from my research, the brown is either over-water or under-water (which helps me not at all!), or possibly spider mites or fungus. lots of causes....

  8. Kyle,
check out Jamali Garden supplies. they have cheaper versions of some of these, e.g.,:

  12. You lucky lucky lady! I have been looking EVERYWHERE for fiddle leaf figs here in Australia and they don't exist here... That I know of... Oh and I would definitely go with a Chinese blue and white planter. So pretty.

I have also often seen fiddle leafs in weave baskets but I'm not sure how practical that would be! ??

  13. I love #11 best. I saw an 8 foot fiddle leaf last spring at Home Depot for $70 and I'm still kicking myself for not getting it. Great find!

  14. Ahh Kyle! I ran right out last night (I'm a total whack job) and raided Home Depot and thankfully they had them. I got one, but its definitely squatty. Not tall/tree-like. But happy notheless and was only out $24.99. THANK YOU SO MUCH for the tip!

  17. I have had one of these for three and a half months...see a picture from July 17th and One from Nov. 17th...they definitely grow quickly. It's harder to find larger ones...but they grow very rapidly if given the right conditions. A lot of sources say bright, indirect light but I find that if you give it ample water, it will actually thrive in direct light. Keep in mind, these plants grow outdoors in tropical areas...they're a rainforest plant, and thus can tolerate a broad range of conditions from shade to sun.

I have found them easy to care for. The main issue is that they tend to grow upright with a single trunk, and don't usually grow enough wood to support their own weight. You can make them grow bushier by pruning them, cutting off the top, and they will sprout out to the side more...but the one pictured here looks bushy already. They can grow upright but I think in their native habitat they're usually an epiphyte (growing on other plants) so they like something for support. Having them up against a wall might make sense.

  18. Gabrielle - you'll find them in Australia in the summer with a bit of hunting around nurseries. We have one (live in Melb)
