Dream Homes by William Hefner

My husband and I recently found out that we are going to have to demo our pool...a HUGE bummer, especially since we were completely blind-sided by it. We bought the house for the pool-appropriate lot size so despite the cost, we are going to put a new one in. The sum up the situation, I'm feeling very frustrated and apprehensive about the impending demo and construction process. Waaa waah.

Since we're pretty much starting from scratch with the design, I've been scouring the interwebs for inspiration. During my recon missions, I ran across William Hefner's work on Pinterest. William Hefner, Inc. is an LA-based architecture firm that has executed some pretty amazing projects.

After finding my way the the WH site, I looked through everything and had the most fun looking through the Residential portfolio. The homes designed by this group are really unique and special both on the outside and inside. There are so many distinct elements that make these houses so extraordinary...for instance, I love the tiled roofs, steel windows, and the paneled walls. These are all details that I hope to include in a custom home one day.

 Is your jaw on the floor? I'd die to live in any of the homes above but I probably like the exterior of the one above best. I like the interior of the French-style one though. What about you?

Inspiration from Elle Decor

Yesterday the latest issue of Elle Decor came in the mail. I flipped through it and wasn't blown away by anything in particular (maybe it's an awkward time at the mag since they recently changed editors). I did, however, notice a shot of this room...it was on the first page of a feature called Curtain Calls.

It's designed by Brian McCarthy. I love that he used black shades under white curtains. It looks chic and from a practicality standpoint, the dark shades are probably ideal for sleeping in. The print on the curtains is fantastic and I love that the motif was also subtly used on the armchair. The carpet and the black-lacquered molding are favorite elements as well. The overall effect is somewhere between exotic and sophisticated...which is a tough mix to get right!

I was curious to see the rest of his portfolio so I checked out some of the projects showcased on the Brian J. McCarthy, Inc. site. His work is quite varied, which I assume means that he adapts well to his clients' tastes and preferences. These are the spaces I found most interesting...

Since the portfolio was all over the place (from über modern to syrupy traditional), I'd really like to see his home to get a better idea of his personal style. Brian, if you're reading this, feel free to invite me over ;)
