La Vida de Lujo - Designed by Pablo Paniagua

I audibly oohed and aahed upon seeing photos of the following apartment designed by Spanish designer Pablo Paniagua. The home is located in a super old building right in the middle of Madrid...or at least that is what I gathered from Google's translation of Nuevo Estilo's online feature, Orden Clásico. I'm obviously impaired by the fact that I don't speak Spanish...hopefully my post title sort of makes sense!

Full of crisp whites and deep, dark hues, this design scheme really harnesses the power of contrast. In every room, lights and darks were adeptly combined to create drama and sophistication. The streamlined palette allows the architecture and the eclectic set of furnishings to shine. Take a look and please excuse my excessive amount of commentary!

The facet of this area that I like best is the set of four of cocktail tables. Clean-lined tables like these work in almost any setting and this foursome occupies the space perfectly. Finding a large-scale coffee table to anchor a space can be a real challenge and this set up is a great solution. I also like the retro sofa and the gourd lamps caught my eye too. The translation indicated that the lamps are opaline...which makes me desperate for purchasing information!

Instead of a console table, a desk can be perfect behind a sofa like this one is here. It looks fantastic and it probably gets plenty of use too. That desk is to die for...and so are those grand, glossy black doors!

I'm loving the twin ivory ottomans with the rich navy sofas. And the powder blue accent pillows add just the right dose of modernity.

In case you're fixated on the pillows on the navy sofa, the fabric is called Golden Sunburst from Jim Thompson's Tony Duquette Collection. A swatch is shown below...

I could talk about this dining room all day long! To me, the overall look of the space is awesome...it's cool, sophisticated, and intriguing. The juxtaposition of the huge, dramatic red canvas (by Anke Blaue) with the stately trimwork really sets the classic + current tone.

I assume that those are butler's pantries on either side of the artwork and if so, that would be such a clutch element in a dining room. Or perhaps they are just points of entry into the room. Whatever they are, the glass-paneled doors are simply perfect. Further, I love the classic ebonized walnut tables, which were designed by Pablo Paniagua, and the tufted-seat chairs are so chic. The overhead pendants are a unexpected twist and they definitely keep the space looking fresh. The only quasi-negative part of the room is the double table set up. Having two separate tables doesn't make sense to me so I'd love to know why that arrangement was chosen.

Contrast is king in this kitchen. I love the simplicity and the floor to ceiling cabinetry. I also really like the oversized Roman shades.

Finally, here is a pretty marble-clad bathroom in the home. I've included it because I like the idea of placing a bar for hand towels on the sink console...a lot of that has to do with the fact that it's a nice way to show off monogrammed towels ;)

Well, what are your thoughts about the apartment? Any favorite rooms? I think it's pretty spectacular and would love to be able to see the whole thing in person. There are a few more shots of the project over at Nuevo Estilo so pop over there and take a look if you want to see more!

More is More, Especially with Malachite

As you might've read about a few weeks ago, I recently had the privilege of going to a luncheon hosted by SFERRA at Tony Duquette's Dawnridge estate. Touring the home that the late designer and his partner, Hutton Wilkinson, decorated was inspiring to say the least. Every inch of the property was captivating...every space was full of rich color, texture, and artistry. So when Hutton was giving the grand tour, my ears perked each time he mentioned that something was still in production. One of the items he noted was an insanely gorgeous malachite rug that Roubini produces. You can see it at Dawnridge in this photo.

Anyhow, I would kill to have the rug in my living room, but alas that's not in the cards at the moment. So, I'll be living vicariously through the following board...

You might've noticed that I can't get malachite out of my head lately! There's just something completely mesmerizing about it. Clearly, I'm not alone in my fixation on the material. Tony and Hutton's love affair with malachite certainly plays out in many ways at Dawnridge. It is featured on a variety of surfaces...floors and walls, case goods and soft goods.

To pay homage to his colleague's signature use of malachite, Hutton has produced a collection of Tony Duquette fabrics, which includes a malachite print.  Using some of Tony's original, hand-painted malachite fabric remnants, Hutton updated the design by including more colors and now the fabric - 3325 Gemstone - is available through Jim Thompson.

Malachite is also a staple in the Tony Duquette jewelry collection...apparently it was one of Tony's favorite stones to work with.

Finally, while we're talking about all things Tony Duquette, did you see that the sconces used in the board are from the Tony Duquette Collection by Remains Lighting? The set is based on original designs or fixtures created by the late designer. Besides the sconces used above, I especially love the Splashing Water lamps and sconces...

Whether you love it or not, you certainly can't be bored in the world of Tony Duquette! I'm grateful to Hutton Wilkinson for not only hosting me at Dawnridge, but more importantly for doing such a remarkable job of keeping Tony's spirit alive and relevant today. There is nobody in the world that could have done a better job of honoring the great designer's legacy. It's not often that creativity and ingenuity co-exist with exquisite taste and a formidable work ethic. Those qualities seem inherent in both Tony and Hutton and I'm so glad they had so many years of fruitful collaboration together. Cheers to Hutton for continuing to create, design, and beautify the world...and also for inspiring the rest of us to do so too!

A Day in Tony Duquette's World

Last Sunday I was privileged to be included in a glorious day at Tony Duquette's historic Dawnridge estate. Hosted by the dapper and convivial Hutton Wilkinson along with the warm and gracious Ronda Carman, a luncheon was held in honor of SFERRA's 120th Anniversary. I'm a huge fan of SFERRA linens (I have them on every bed in our house now), so I was more than happy to toast to the venerable company's many years of success. The guest list was full of amazingly talented people and the setting could not have been more ideal for the group. It was such a special gathering and feel very lucky to have been a part of it.

For those who aren't familiar with him, Tony Duquette is legendary for being a preeminent American interior designer, sculptor, and jewelry designer. His name lives on through his partnership with Hutton Wilkinson who now serves as the owner, creative director, and president of Tony Duquette, Inc. Under Hutton's brilliant guidance, the company produces exquisite fine jewelry, home furnishings for Baker, textiles for Jim Thompson, as well as decor and tabletop accessories under the Tony Duquette trademark. To learn more about Tony and the evolution of his art and business, be sure to get the following books: More Is More: Tony Duquette and Tony Duquette. Thanks to Hutton, the books are beautiful and together they offer a more complete glimpse into the late designer's world.

Finally, be sure to log in for One Kings Lane's Tony Duquette Tastemaker Tag Sale tomorrow, March 5 beginning at 8am PT. Until then, take a look at the "Meet Our Tastemakers" slideshow on the OKL site...it shows some great snapshots of Tony and his work!

I LOVE this doorway and rug. The curtains were created with a fabric that Hutton designed. I believe it was called Ermine...whatever it's called, it's stunning.

This was taken with my iPhone...which explains the bad quality!

Absolutely amazing place isn't it? I wish there were more shots of the exterior. The grounds are breathtaking...I literally felt like I was in some exotic locale. Like I said before, the luncheon was a truly memorable experience and I'm so thankful to Ronda and Hutton for being such wonderful hosts.

Lastly, be sure to tune into the One Kings Lane's Tony Duquette Tastemaker Tag Sale tomorrow, March 5 starting at 8am PT!
