Pool and Patio Update

As far as our house goes, this has been an eventful year. It was about twelve months ago that my husband and I found out that the pool was cracked beyond repair. We ended up tearing out the old pool and putting in a new one. Pool construction wrapped up in March and then we started on the bathroom remodel after that...and throughout it all, our backyard has been a total mess. Little by little, my husband and I have been trying to put the pieces back together so that we can once again enjoy our outdoor space.

We are finally close to the finish line and I can now give you a glimpse of some of the changes that have been made. For starters, here are a couple of shots of the new pool and patio...

To give you some perspective of the drastic change, here's a pic of the old pool with its tired aggregate deck and odd shape...

And one of the demo process to show the carnage that occurred last fall/winter...

And back to the present! The new pool has Lueders limestone coping, a concrete pool deck with a light acid wash, onyx quartz plaster, and the waterline tile is Noble Cobblestones 1" in the Ocean color.

When designing the new pool, I kept the shape a simple rectangle and only added a hot tub and one "water feature." The feature is a gas firepit that doubles as a waterfall. I'm excited that the weather is getting cooler so that we can sit by the fire out here...

And here's the inset hot tub...which is WAY bigger and better than our old one...

And along with the new pool, we have some snazzy new outdoor furniture, thanks to my uber generous parents. They gave my hubs and I this as a joint birthday gift and we couldn't be more appreciative. It seriously completes the look! Ignore the umbrella though - I haven't gotten that element taken care of yet :)

I chose to have a custom iron set made by a local shop. It was in the same price range as Brown-Jordan or Restoration Hardware, but the lead time was better and I could get the exact design that I wanted. I ordered a huge daybed, a sofa, chaise lounges, dining chairs, and a table base. The table base was part of the set I designed and then I just had a piece of Carrara cut for the top (and like I said before, the old umbrella needs to be replaced so disregard the ugly pole).

Since the table frame is hard to see in the photos, here is one of the drawings I gave to the fabricator...

I had the cushions made locally by Chair Care Patio (LOVE them) using Sunbrella fabrics. For the color scheme, I picked a minty aqua with ivory contrast cording. And to spice things up, I plan to use the below Trina Turk outdoor fabric for some pillows and maybe some placemats. I adore the print and the punch color is fab with the mint/aqua. I'll keep you posted on those finishing touches!

The pool and the furniture are definitely the highlights of our new and improved outdoor space, but the landscaping plays a big part in the new look too, so I'll chat more about that tomorrow. And yes, I'll be back to daily blogging now that my summer hiatus is officially over. I have lots to talk about after being quiet for all of these months so stay tuned!

Cabana-tastic

At the Knight house, the pool project is coming to a close. There are a few odds and ends that need to be taken care of but from a timing standpoint, it's landscaping and patio decorating time. I'll talk more about the landscaping plan later, so for now I'll focus on one aspect of my decorating plan. The new pool area will have a cabana and I'm pretty pumped about it! Here is a rough digital mock-up I did using Z Gallerie's Portofino Pavillion...

The cabana will be on the north end of the pool and it will be pivotal in terms of form and function. From the function standpoint, it will provide shade and protection from the elements for the outdoor sofa/cushions. Located near the new built-in gas firepit (which is at the top of the waterfall structure in the photo), the structure will anchor a fireside seating area, that will basically replace the covered patio that is going away because of the bathroom remodel.

As far as the form aspect goes, I'm trying to nail down the style. I do love the bold black and white cabana stripes as shown above. Unfortunately we can't use the $700 ready-made ZG option because the size isn't right and I'm pretty sure that the construction wouldn't be up to snuff. So even if I go with a stripe, the cabana will have to be custom and thus the options are endless!

Since cabanas don't fall into the realm of things that I regularly design, I've been doing reconnaissance on different styles. Here are some examples I've found and reasons why they made the inspiration file:

I'm pretty obsessed with striped chaise cushions but wasn't sure if doing the cabana and the seating in stripes would be overkill. This setup eases my qualms...

The super wide stripes on this one are AMAZING. It was featured a while back in Lonny Magazine...

The detailed edge on this one is whimsical and charming...

Ours will be a bit wider than the typical cabana, like this one here...

The Viceroy hotels have become known for their poolside cabanas. I love the classic dentil trim on the top of this one...

Viceroy Palm Springs

The tailored, regency trim details on the top are cool although the look isn't right for our space. I do, however, love the bordered curtains and black tiebacks.

On the interior furniture arrangement, I like the idea of doing horseshoe seating around the perimeter of the cabana like in this one...

Although this one isn't styled all pretty like the others, I like the subtle notched bordered corner details. That treatment would work well with striped fabric.

This one has a fun, Dr. Seuss-esque metal-tipped top (like the umbrella below from Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin). I also like the solid top with the striped sides...

Boutique Tents specializes in unique tents and cabana-like structures and they offer a range of different styles and edge profiles. Their portfolio showcases lots of unique details like the interior fabric on this funky Chinois tent that was used for a wedding. I'd die to do contrasting fabric on the interior of the top, but we shall see how expensive that element is!

Whew...too many ideas flying around! Enough with the brainstorming. I've got to make decisions and get a drawing to the fabricator. Besides the general dimensions and structure materials, elements to spec include:
  • Fabric
  • Shape and style of the top, including edge profile and trim detail
  • Interior fabric for the top
  • Side panel construction
  • Tiebacks
  • Electrical (for overhead light)
Wish me luck :) And let me know what your thoughts are on all of this. Are there any particular cabanas from above that you love? And are there other examples from the interwebs that you think I need to see before I place my order? I'm sure there are some amazing ones from hotels that I've missed!

Budget Outdoor Living

With outdoor living areas being so popular these days, there are lots of affordable options in outdoor furniture. I'm not really in the market for any, but it's all over the place right now so I can't help but look! Also, after having ours for a bit, I have some tips that will hopefully help you choose new stuff or better care for what you already have.

We have a few items from Pottery Barn's Chesapeake Collection. I hate to be a Negative Nancy, but I've been really disappointed with the quality. After only 2 years, the wood is splitting and warping. I've had to re-stain it twice since the dark finish rubbed off easily. Also the wood umbrella from PB snapped in half. If I had to do it all over again, I would buy cheaper pieces, like the ones below (since I can't afford the really good stuff yet). HomeGoods and Target seem to have nice looking pieces too, so be sure to check those out.

From World Market...

From IKEA...

From Pier 1...
From Grandin Road...

The key maintenance factors are covering the furniture when possible (which I hate the look of) and making sure that all wooden areas are treated consistently. I was told to put teak oil (even though it's not teak) on the Chesapeake table, chairs, and chaises after complaining to Pottery Barn about the warping/splitting. Getting this advice AFTER most of the damage had occurred was much less helpful than had PB given it at the time of purchase, but whatever.

With that said...although I prefer the look of wood, metal or plastic wicker are definitely the most carefree options. We have this resort outdoor sectional from CB2 that is resin wicker, and it looks brand new.

We also have some of these $60 wicker stacking chairs from Pier 1. They're great too...just hose them off when they need cleaning.

I love the look of these... Rex Arm Chair from CB2 - $70

Do you have outdoor furniture that you love or hate? Ever bought from any of the retailers mentioned? If so, please share your thoughts!
