Random Pink Picks

Bits of pink keep popping up on my lust list. It's funny how you find tons of great things in the one color that you're not specifically hunting for, isn't it? Well, I have no client projects that require pink nor do I need anything in that color for my own house. So of course, I have a digital war chest of rose colored goodies with no place to put them. But I figured, perhaps some of you need some pink...

Il Conte Arm ChairHand Painted Silk Scarf "Allyson" - Firenze Velvet Tassel Pillow -  X-Bench - Double
Reversible Canvas Storage Bin - Tea Room Wall Mirror
Custom Color Lutyens Bench - Richardson Allen - Ana Candles Striped Tapers - Stem-To-Stem Candlestick

Any favorites? I'm really loving the double X-Bench and would pick that if I could only have one thing from the grab bag. The hand-painted scarf is another favorite...it's made by Kate Thomas. Her Etsy store, Little Things Studio, has lots of cool, one-of-a-kind options in a wide array of colors. I've been stalking her creations for a while and one of these days, I'll have some pillows made out of the scarves and/or have a couple framed.

Pretty Sheeting from Anthropologie

Quick note to tell you about some new favorite bed linens via Anthro. Their Eyelet Embroidered Sheet Set is rocking my world. I LOVE the lineup of colors and the gorgeous embroidered detailing! And to add to the awesomeness, they are made of Egyptian cotton, which is the best in my humble opinion. Take a look...

So cute, huh?

Desk Decorating

I got a couple of questions about the things on my desk after Friday's post. Most of what I have isn't anything that is available for purchase online (except the Graphic Image Crocodile Leather Small Post Flip Pad and Kaweco Fountain Pen shown below) but I thought could at least share a bit on the assortment in general.

I'm a neat freak and get flustered by clutter so I've tried to streamline my set of tools and accessories as much as possible. I firmly believe in creating a workspace that functions well and looks pretty.  To achieve this form/function balance I abide by two basic rules:
  1. Only keep tools that are used everyday out. Everything else can be put away.
  2. The tools that are kept out need to be aesthetically pleasing.
So with those guidelines in mind, I keep the following ten items on my desktop:
  • Cup full of pens/markers
  • Lamp
  • Box for business cards
  • Notepad
  • Paperweight
  • Box for paper clips, rubber bands, and flash drives
  • Kleneex
  • Candle
  • Letter tray
  • Monitor + wireless keyboard and mouse
The useful tools that aren't so pretty are put in less conspicuous places. For instance, on the trestle shelf of my desk, I keep a tea tin for storing USB cords and a huge tape measure sits on top of that. Just behind the desk there is a bookcase that holds a desktop file box (with neat looking file folders), a printer, and lots of storage boxes that contain and hide everything from paint fan decks to samples and fabric remnants. This area is about to change though...will keep you posted on that plan. Anyhow, the idea is that I try to keep it simple, edit out anything I don't use often, and hide the stuff that isn't nice to look at.

Anyhow, if you're dying to make your workspace more snazzy (and bright), I've put together some different iterations of my essentials...plus a huge magnetic dry erase board that is on my wish list:

Lacquer Tissue Box - Jonathan Adler
Acrylic Desktop Sorter - Container Store
Dragon Rice Bowl Candle - Market Street Candles
(for pens and pencils) Plimpton Peony Vase - Jill Rosenwald
Obviously I like a little color for a workspace! I think it's fun and cheerful and can make working more of a pleasure...it's the little things, right? So, what are your workspace essentials? What do you keep on your desk? Are you particular about how everything looks?

Original Art from Anthro

Did you all know that Anthropologie is now selling original artwork? The work of ten artists is showcased in their One of a Kind Art section. It's a pretty varied lineup in terms of styles and media and the prices range from $150 to $6,000. Hopefully they will continue to expand in this area. It's amazing what an opportunity like this can do for an artist. Not many relatively undiscovered talents get this sort of international exposure, so kudos to Anthro for teaming up with them!

Because it is such a mixed bag, you'll undoubtedly pick favorites more quickly than if the set was more homogeneous. Abstract expressionism always jumps out to me...especially if I'm art shopping on my computer. So, I immediately fell for the paintings by Montreal artist Claire Desjardins. Her canvases are filled with interesting forms and exuberant color. Here are my picks from her Anthro oeuvre, all of which are acrylic on canvas...

I also loved the one and only piece by Christopher Stott, called Good Times. But I was disappointed to discover that it's a giclee. A giclee is a reproduction so I certainly wouldn't classify it as "one of a kind" and I don't think Anthro should have included it in their offering.

Finally, I liked this oil on canvas called Moss by Yangyang Pan.

So, I'd really like to hear about your favorite artists and/or pieces in Anthro's One of a Kind Art set. Did you like anything that you saw? Do you think they will sell the art or do you think people won't be willing to purchase semi-expensive artwork from a national retailer like Anthropologie?

Graphic Image Date Book Office Inspiration #2

Per my announcement on 8/26, Graphic Image has graciously offered up a 20% discount on all purchases and a snazzy 2012 date book to giveaway to one lucky reader...enter now if you haven't already!

Graphic Image makes gorgeous and functional date books, which are available in a variety of colors, styles, and sizes. The winner will get to pick their favorite combo and I'm guessing that it will be a tough decision given that there are so many fabulous options!

I'm putting together a few office/study mood boards to showcase some of those options and to show how a Graphic Image planner can serve as both an organizational tool and a piece of decor. Today I have a gorgeous, Blue 2012 Notebook in Crocodile Embossed Leather in the mix...

Crystal Coaster in Bargello - Jonathan Adler
A Passion for Blue and White by Carolyne Roehm - Amazon
Academie (403239) Frame - Larson-Juhl
Rimmed Vase by Match Pewter - Michael C. Fina
Howell Wingback - Anthropologie
Beckett Desk - Serena & Lily
Jaguar Light Rug - Horchow
Claude Dining Chair - Jonathan Adler

What do you think of this office board? Blue is a favorite color of mine, so I like everything in the set. The Cerulean bead chandelier, the Beckett desk, and the Belle Meade Camden lamp table are my absolute favorite things though. Oh, and that Lapis Lazuli fountain pen is pretty sweet too! What are your picks?

Have a great weekend everyone!

Quadrille-Inspired Bedding by Z Gallerie?

I ran across Z Gallerie's new Zuri bedding and instantly felt like the fabrics used were familiar. As it turns out, both the ikat and the zig zag patterns are pretty similar to two of Quadrille's signature prints, Kazak and Tashkent II.

Here is Quadrille's Kazak print which resembles the duvet and standard shams...
Photo via Quadrille

Image via Annie Loveridge

And they have a nifty two-toned Tashkent II that in a blue colorway, would look quite like the fabric Z Gallerie used for the euro shams...

Dear Quadrille, please provide LARGER photos on your website...thanks :)

Wherever their inspiration came from, I like the Zuri bedding, however, I wouldn't use the whole set since it's the print is so bold and saturated. All together it looks too busy but when paired with crisp white sheets like Serena & Lily's Navy Gobi Embroidered set and a simple coverlet or quilt like Donna Karan Home's Quilt. I really like the zig zag euro shams best and could skip the ikat altogether and go with a floral accent pillow like the Finishing Flourish pillow from Anthro...

What do you think of the Zuri bedding? Do you think that ZG might have knocked off Quadrille? Both ikat and zig zags have been trendy patterns over the past few years so they might have come up with it independently.

Also, if you do like the bedding, would you use the ikat and the zig zag together or would you divert from the ethnic pattern family and go with a floral like I did above?

Low Cost, Low Risk Colorful Accents

I'm a big fan of neutral upholstery mixed with jolts of color. Especially when you're buying upholstered furniture that needs to stick around for a while, this is the best strategy. By keeping investment pieces classic and neutral, you can be daring with less expensive and easily changeable items like pillows and lamps. Bold, colorful accessories, accent furniture, and artwork can really bring a room to life so don't fret if your staple pieces seem a bit ho-hum.

I have a war chest full of resources for these sorts of accents and one that I routinely check is Urban Outfitters. They have inexpensive "apartment" goods and some are rather stylish while others are not what I'd put in my house. Anyhow, there are diamonds in the rough and on my last visit I spotted this fun yellow floor lamp. With a great vintage aesthetic and wild color, I knew that it would come in handy for a future project. I can totally see this by a glider in a nursery or I also like it in a fresh, modern (kinda girly) living area like this...
Vintage Floor Lamp - Urban Outfitters
Journey - Acrylic on canvas by Jen Ramos - Cocoa and Hearts
Hutton Chaise - Room & Board
Nixon Throw - Jonathan Adler

Here's the same room with a different pillow and throw...which option do you like better?

Quatrefoil Pillow - COCOCOZY
Persian Charm Green Throw - Sabira Home

I also ran across these two inexpensive side tables on the UO site. I think they're pretty cute...I really love the green one!
Coil Side Table - Urban Outfitters
Silver Leaf Side Table - Urban Outfitters

Do you ever shop Urban Outfitters for decor? As you might know, they are owned by the same company as Anthropologie so UO is kind of like Anthro's funky, thriftier sister ;)

Another Score in the Lamp Department at HomeGoods

Check out this killer lamp I spotted --> grabbed --> bought last week at HomeGoods. It's exactly the same as the ones that Shades of Light and Anthropologie sell for about $250...at HG it was $69! Anyhow, I picked it up for a client with the goal of finding a twin at a different store. She needs a pair and I had no luck on my quest so she's going with a different set.

I might try to use it in another project and if it doesn't work there, I'm tempted to keep it...even though I absolutely do not need another lamp! In the pic below, it's in a guest room and the color looks great in there. Realistically, I want a pair for that room because I plan to put two nightstands in there (right now there is just one along with a bookcase).

Such a steal, right? Do you ever shop at HomeGoods? If there's a store anywhere close to you, be sure to keep tabs on the lamp department!

Flower Power

I adore bold prints and while I usually fall for those of the geometric variety, lately I've been into florals. When it comes to floral prints, a little goes a long way so it's important to temper them with items that aren't fussy. I like to juxtapose bold floral prints with sleek modern elements so that the space doesn't end up being too feminine. There are tons of bright, floral pillows, rugs, and fabrics out there and below I've taken a few to show how florals can be used to add color and interest without looking girly (or granny)!

Unbridled Bathroom Design

A reader recently emailed me about creating a design for her future bathroom. Since her fiance is in medical school and will be beginning his residency soon, she actually doesn't know where this bathroom will be...so there aren't nitty gritty details to take into account yet. As far as color goes, she mentioned blues and grey, and noted that there are touches of yellow and green around their current apartment. Other than those broad parameters, I had a blank slate and it was fun creating the following bathroom look for the soon-to-be-wed couple:

Keeping her fiance in mind, I tried not to go too girly...the use of navy and the industrial accents help in that regard. What do you think?

Marvis Toothpaste - Waterworks
Monogram Tray - Jill Rosenwald on Etsy
Mayfair Glass Jar - Urban Outfitters

Other Accents
Suction Cup Shower Clock - Urban Outfitters

Under Foot
Outdoor Rug - Pottery Barn (to go in front of sink)

Zigzag Floral Shower Curtain - Urban Outfitters
Maxwell Towels - Leontine Linens*
Diamond Bath Mat - Somewhere in cyberspace! For the life of me, I can't find the source for this thanks to my browser crashing during recon. If I figure it out, I'll add it to the post.

*The Leontine Linens towels are super expensive, and since she's getting married and can register for towels, these embroidered ones from Pottery Barn would be a great alternative...

Mood Board Monday - Rainy Day Bedroom

Pewter & Sage is hosting another Mood Board Monday...this time, the theme is "beautiful bedding." Specifically, we were given a few different bedding options to choose from, then we were to create a bedroom around our choice.

I LOVE bed linens so I was pumped about this one! I even did two moodboards...the first was for Nate Berkus day :) They are so different from each other...one is super colorful and this one is much more neutral. Do you have a favorite between the two?
